Concrete in the subway
The blue lights in bloom
You step into that cavern
and then you watch the train move
Make a turn take a step
and then you’re outside at dawn
It’s cruel to live now
now that you’re gone
NOTES
"Utopian Deli" by Alan Lewis Silva

In the Utopian Deli I was eating the food
thinking of all the things that I gotta do
like take out the garbage and shine your shoes
They say this is life really, but it’s more like a zoo

I can’t get out, I live in a cage
Five foot ten, a hundred-fifty pounds it weighs
I was born here, they even gave me a name
So I reached out my hand to touch the falling rain

At the Utopian Deli they were reading the news
Kids were playing pinball and I was thinking of you
Love’s like a dryer that steals your socks
and you realize what it is you’re missing when you’re kissing a rock

The waitress says, This order ain’t right
If you make it like this, then we’re gonna fight!
Put the cheese on the burger, not the bun, alright?
I said, Sure thing, honey, but I think the lamp is too bright

What do you want me to do? Turn it down? a red head asks
I said that I can if you want to but she says it’s gotta pass
I said That’s a lie! She says The door’s made of glass!
And then the lights went out and the night was black

A man comes to me for a bowl of soup
I said: A naked lunch is the right order for you
But I knew if he got it, he wouldn’t have a clue
So I gave him some wine, I said Here
You know, it’s Christ’s blood too!

People will buy most things we sell
like the Modern Age and the steeple bell
They’re even telling me we need more prison cells
I feel like Humpty Dumpty is one of the cracked eggshells

At the Utopian Deli I was eating the food
thinking of all things that I gotta do
like take out the garbage a shine your shoes
they say this is life, baby, but it’s more like a zoo
