Gypsy Songs

Released 2013
Released 2013
The blues-folk-jazz song content, great on piano, lyrics, and guitar, resonates well with an ethereal, bohemian mood of low levels and heavy desires, completing in art the cycle of Alan Lewis Silva's previous studio release, Rose Blood.

2. Walls Are Thumping

The walls are thumping
The cars are bumping
twelve new moons in year

My hands are crazy
and I’m getting lazy
I think I might step out of here

The toilet’s grumbling
and it’s slowly swishing…
A rainy night in Hollywood

I’m typing my sonata
in lonely California
I think I’ll leave this place for good

Well, don’t come close
and don’t get near
It’s such a struggle when you gotta lend an ear

There’s no connection
between a man and his lisp
if you make the list
then you’re on the road

A toilet’s grumbling
and it’s slowly swishing…
A rainy night in Hollywood

I’m typing my sonata
in lonely California
I thought I left this place for good

3. Only Waiting

Well, if you want some help
I’ll help you
And if you want a lover
I’ll be a lover for you

I’m only waiting…
I’m only waiting…
I’m only waiting… for you

If you want me to go
I’ll go away with
If you want me to stay
I’ll stay with you

I’m only waiting…
I’m only waiting…
I’m only waiting… for you

Well, we’ll go down to the ocean
where the lovers roam
Let’s swim in the water
where the old people never go

And if you say you love me
I’ll always remember
even when I’m tortured in a dungeon
in the very bleak December

I’m only waiting…
I’m only waiting…
I’m only waiting… for you

6. Dada

I don’t wanna be another midnight rambler
ex-police or an axe-man’s manager
Meet me at the White Sombrero with the gambler
We’ll cut through the turkey and eat the bone matter

There’s room with the pigs in the pen and the poke
And if they don’t like you then they’ll turn you into smoke
You try to play it folk and they call you Bob Dylan
The last time in September… Dada!

I woke up self-conscious in a pool of blood
I tripped over a fence but I fell in the mud
a white sombrero by my side as the moon did glow
bending over a mountain with voice saying, “Dada!”

8. Water in the Well

I got a home in Kentucky
but it’s covered in snow
The winter passed
a long, long time ago
I had to open my arms wide
wider than they’ve ever been
I can’t tell which way is up
The wind’s blowin’ again

Water in the well…
Water in the well…

I spent so long selling horseshoes
I couldn’t find the horseshoe man
My bedroom is covered with cobwebs
My head’s full of sand

Water in the well…
Water in the well…

Well, sometimes you gotta strike fear
into the heart of someone
to make ‘em do what they should
Other times, you do it ‘cause you want to
and you burn in hell like a piece of wood

And it’s water in the well…
Water in the well…

If I remembered all the advice
the city fathers gave to me
it wouldn’t a-done me any good because
they’re not working for me

Once I found a diamond girl
that showed me my dark side
I wouldn’t make that mistake again
because I love her eyes

Water in the well…
Water in the well…

And if I ever go back to New Orleans
say a prayer for me
Who am I to refute the universe?

Water in the well…
Water in the well…

11. Mystery Illness

It happened yesterday
My head began to ache
My body was reeling
I had to shake
I got a funny feeling
‘bout the mystery illness

My friend got the plague
Did I get it from her at the lake?
Mystery illness…

Well, the day doesn’t matter to me
It’s only the night that counts
I been walking ‘round in circles
I play deaf and dumb to myself

And nothing gets accomplished,
so they say
But I got a feeling that I
got to stay
Mystery illness…

My friend got the plague
Did I get it from her at the lake?
Mystery illness…
Mystery illness…

Feels like I’m locked in a prison
but maybe it’s just a belly-ache
The door beam looks like it’s moving
I hope forever isn’t today…

I’ll see how it goes
Will the water flow
out of the faucet
‘cause I’m thirsty?

Mystery illness…
Mystery illness…

12. Paths of Relocation

Time you might be leaving
Don’t forget your coat
The train leaves at nine
It’s time, you gotta go

Well, nothing will protect you
There’s no victory
just a lie that you’ve been living
changed irrevocably

Well, gather up your trinkets
and all the things you know
You’ll find that what you got
won’t let you go

Well, where are you going in Nashville?
Where does the horse lead?
I’ve heard the paths of relocation
aren’t quite free

It’s so quiet tonight
It’s as if everybody knows
the rumors that the brake man’s been spreading
that we’re on a traveling show

Well, your long-lost companion
he told me, that quite auspiciously
the more this train runs your life
the less you need its company

The clouds fall on the river
The rain chokes the air
Well, everyone’s mistaken
It’s distortion everyone

When roused by momentum
the shrill rail calls
it’s voice in the wilderness
You hear it through the walls

Paths of relocation…
Paths of relocation…
Paths…

13. Run of the Mill

Twenty-three birds on the lake
I counted them all, there’s no mistake
Ninety-nine more on the hill
But it don’t matter, baby
‘cause it’s a run of the mill

Cut me down a leaf from the tree
I put it in a box that’s with wooden debris
And I’m that leaf, the box is my brill
and you’re the debris, baby
it’s a run of the mill

The shroud of the fog covers the sand
The record of tears I covered with my hand
And the love letter where your voice is ringing still
can’t turn no further
it’s a run of the mill

It seems like the more I want you
the harder it is to do anything else
Seems like the more I need you
the more I can’t get nothing else
But you know
it’s a run of the mill

14. Like a Shelf

I rested with you there
with the spiders in your hair
Everything you had was just like despair
And love to you was just a toy
Well, who was I to end such a casual joy?

You’re standing there nude
You look swell
like something I pulled from a wishing well
Did I set my love on you
like a shelf?

Well, now you’re chasing pigeons
like the memories of your life
Remember what I told you
‘bout sickness, greed, and strife?
Remember how I loved you?
You tore my soul apart
It’s bad for my posture
but it’s good for my art

You’re standing there nude
and you look swell
like something I pulled from a wishing well
Did I set my love on you
like a shelf?

Well, it’s easy to love you
It’s hard to know why
with that smile on your face
and that sparkle in your eye
I bet you got a few tricks
tucked away up under your sleeve
But it’s okay, baby, I won’t leave

You’re standing there nude
Baby, you look swell
like something I pulled from a wishing well
Did I set my love on you
like a shelf?

19. The Good Ship Comes

Soak your skin in the water
Rest yourself and finally let go
Go to sleep it seems so easy
when the sun is setting low

No regrets and no more sorrow
Love waits for no one
And we’ll be on the fisherman’s ferry
to drink wine and then be merry
when the good ship comes in

Touch the clear pearly water
from the quay to the inn
The revolution can wait ‘til tomorrow
when the ship comes in

No regrets and no more sorrow
Love waits for no one
And we’ll be on the fisherman’s ferry
to drink wine and then be merry
um hmm, when the ship comes in
um hmm…

Well, we don’t need to talk to no one
We’ll all feel fine
I was thinking about your offer
for a second time

No regrets, and no more sorrow
A love waits for no one
And we’ll be on the fisherman’s ferry
to drink wine and then be merry when the…
um hmm, when the ship comes in…
um hmm, when the ship comes in…
